The British M3 “Lancer” was an experimental tank destroyer developed during 1942 by mounting a 57mm 6-pounder anti-tank gun into the hull of the U.S.-built M3 Lee/Grant chassis. Intended as a stopgap vehicle to provide British armoured units with greater anti-tank firepower, the Lancer replaced the sponson-mounted 75mm with a more effective high-velocity gun capable of engaging German medium armour. Armour protection remained similar to the standard M3, with up to 51mm on the front, while mobility was unchanged, powered by the Continental R975 radial engine with a road speed of around 38 km/h (24 mph). Despite its potential, the conversion was cramped, offered poor crew ergonomics, and was considered only marginally better than existing M3s or upcoming Sherman variants. Ultimately, the project was abandoned after testing, with the British preferring to focus on the development of dedicated tank destroyers like the Archer and on adopting the Sherman Firefly. The M3 Lancer remained an experimental curiosity and never entered mass production or combat service.
