The USA M3 Lee (Mid War Variant) was a medium tank introduced in 1941, serving as an important stopgap design until the M4 Sherman became widely available. It mounted a 75mm M2/M3 gun in a right-hand sponson with limited traverse, complemented by a 37mm M5 gun in the turret and several .30 cal machine guns, giving it a mix of anti-armor and anti-infantry firepower. Armour protection was up to 51mm, and the tall silhouette made it easy to spot but allowed for a spacious fighting compartment. Powered by a Continental R975 radial engine or other alternatives depending on production, the M3 could reach speeds of 38 km/h (24 mph). The mid-war variants incorporated improvements such as thicker armour, better radio equipment, and minor layout changes compared to the early models. The M3 Lee saw extensive service with U.S. forces in North Africa and with the British (as the “Grant” variant), where it proved valuable against early Axis armour, though it quickly became outclassed by later German tanks. Despite its awkward design, it gave Allied crews a reliable and hard-hitting tank during a critical period of the war.
