The German StuH 42 (Sturmhaubitze 42) was a 105mm assault gun introduced in 1942–43, built on the Panzer III chassis to give infantry formations a powerful close-support and bunker-busting weapon. Armed with the 105mm StuH 42 howitzer, it fired heavy high-explosive rounds ideal for smashing fortifications and urban strongpoints while also usable in direct-fire against armoured targets at short ranges. In late-war field practice some StuH 42s received Alkett-applied Zimmerit, thin Schürzen skirts, and improvised concrete applique from unit workshops to improve local protection against shaped charges and infantry anti-tank methods. These add-ons increased short-term survivability in static or urban defence but came at the cost of extra weight, higher ground pressure, and reduced mobility and reliability. Mostly a pragmatic field adaptation rather than factory standard, such modified StuH 42s illustrate the late-war measures German units used to bolster protection when factory upgrades were unavailable.
