The StuG III Ausf. G with pivot Schürzen and concrete applique armour was a field-modified, late-war variant born of necessity rather than factory design. Starting in 1943–44 crews and workshops fitted the Ausf. G’s low, lengthened superstructure and effective 7.5cm StuK 40 L/48 gun with the usual thin pivoting Schürzen skirts to defeat anti-tank rifles and shaped charges, then—especially during static or urban defence—added improvised concrete or concrete-filled boxes to vulnerable areas (sponson sides, engine deck or the superstructure front). These concrete add-ons offered some extra protection against shell splinters, small-calibre weapons and blast, but they added significant weight, raised ground pressure, and could crack or spall under heavy fire, reducing mobility and stressing the suspension.

Used chiefly as a stopgap on sectors where immediate heavy protection was needed (notably in last-ditch urban and defensive actions), these StuG IIIs traded agility for short-term survivability. They remained vulnerable to dedicated anti-tank guns and HE rounds, and crews preferred factory armour or welded appliqués where possible; nevertheless, the concrete-armoured, pivot-schürzen StuG stands as a clear example of late-war German field improvisation when material shortages and intense combat forced unit workshops to jury-rig solutions in the field.
