The StuG III Ausf. G (Late Production Model) with pivot Schürzen was a late-war field variant of Germany’s ubiquitous assault gun, combining the long-barrel 7.5cm StuK 40 L/48 gun with the low-silhouette, heavily armoured Ausf. G hull. Armour was up to 80mm frontally, crewed by four, and it retained the Maybach HL 120 powerplant and the Ausf. G’s lengthened superstructure for improved internal space. The thin Schürzen side-skirts—intended to defeat anti-tank rifles and shaped charges—were usually fitted on earlier Ausf. Gs as pivoting plates to allow easier maintenance of the running gear; by late production many factories had moved to fixed mounting for simplicity, but field-refits and some workshop conversions mean late-war vehicles with pivoted Schürzen do appear in records. These pivot skirts offered the same protective effect while allowing quicker access to bogies and tracks, making such machines a practical compromise in units that wanted both protection and maintainability during sustained operations on the Eastern and Western Fronts.
