The German StuG III Ausf. G (Early Production Model) with Pivot Schürzen was one of the first iterations of the final and most widely produced version of the Sturmgeschütz III assault gun, introduced in late 1942. Built on the proven Panzer III chassis, the Ausf. G featured a lengthened superstructure and mounted the powerful 7.5cm StuK 40 L/48 gun, capable of destroying most Allied and Soviet tanks of the time. Armour protection was improved to 80mm on the front, and many early models were fitted with pivot-mounted Schürzen—thin armoured side skirts designed to protect against anti-tank rifles and shaped-charge weapons. These early pivoting versions could swing outward to allow easier access to the running gear for maintenance, a design later replaced by fixed brackets for simplicity. Powered by the reliable Maybach HL 120 TRM engine, it reached speeds of around 40 km/h (25 mph) and offered excellent reliability and a low silhouette, making it a deadly ambush weapon. The early Ausf. G with pivot Schürzen saw extensive action on the Eastern Front and in the Mediterranean, marking the point where the StuG evolved from an infantry support vehicle into one of Germany’s most effective tank destroyers.
