French
Army

The French Army in World War II underwent one of the most dramatic transformations of any major power during the conflict. In 1939–1940, it was one of Europe’s largest and most modern forces on paper, equipped with strong armour (such as the Char B1 and Somua S35) and well-trained infantry. However, outdated tactics, poor communication, and rigid command structures contributed to France’s rapid defeat during the German invasion in May–June 1940. Following the surrender, France was divided between the Vichy regime, which collaborated with Germany, and the Free French Forces led by General Charles de Gaulle, who continued the fight from abroad.
