The Belgian Gate, also known as a Cointet Element, was a heavy steel anti-tank obstacle developed by Belgium in the 1930s as part of its defensive preparations against German invasion. Originally designed to block roads and delay advancing armor, each gate was about 3 meters wide, 2 meters tall, and weighed approximately 1,280 kilograms (2,800 lbs), making it extremely difficult to move without specialized equipment. Constructed from welded steel bars and mounted on rollers, the gates could be linked together to form continuous barriers or placed individually at key chokepoints such as roads, bridges, and fortifications. During the German invasion of 1940, many Belgian Gates were deployed along the K-W Line (Koningshooikt–Wavre Line) to impede German armored units. After the fall of Belgium, the Wehrmacht repurposed many of these gates in their own defensive systems, including along the Atlantic Wall, where they were used to block beach exits and hinder Allied landings. Though static in nature, the Belgian Gate was a durable and effective element of early war defensive engineering.
