The British Archer was a unique self-propelled anti-tank gun developed during World War II, notable for its rear-facing gun design. Built on the chassis of the Valentine infantry tank, the Archer was armed with the powerful 17-pounder (76.2mm) anti-tank gun, one of the most effective Allied weapons against German armor. Unlike traditional tank destroyers, the gun was mounted facing backward, meaning the vehicle had to reverse into firing positions—allowing for quick withdrawal after firing, but requiring careful positioning. Introduced in 1944, the Archer featured low silhouette and good concealment capabilities, making it ideal for ambush tactics and defensive roles. Although its armor was relatively light, the Archer's firepower was sufficient to destroy even heavy German tanks such as the Tiger I and Panther at long range. It saw combat in Northwest Europe and Italy, serving with both British and Commonwealth forces. The Archer’s unusual layout proved effective in practice, and it remained in use into the post-war years, highlighting its success as a compact and deadly tank destroyer.
