The Pyrrhic Wars were fought between 280 and 275 BC, mainly between the expanding Roman Republic and King Pyrrhus of Epirus, who intervened in southern Italy on behalf of the Greek city of Tarentum.
Pyrrhus brought a powerful Hellenistic army to Italy, including Macedonian-style phalanxes, cavalry and war elephants. He defeated the Romans at Heraclea in 280 BC and Asculum in 279 BC, but suffered such heavy losses that his victories became difficult to sustain. This gave rise to the expression “Pyrrhic victory”, meaning a victory achieved at such a high cost that it is almost equivalent to defeat.
Pyrrhus later campaigned in Sicily against Carthage before returning to Italy. His army was finally defeated by the Romans at the Battle of Beneventum in 275 BC, after which he withdrew to Epirus. The war demonstrated Rome’s ability to recover from major defeats and helped establish Roman dominance over southern Italy.
