The 8th SS Cavalry Division “Florian Geyer” played a significant role in the Battle of Budapest (October 1944 – February 1945), one of the last major and most brutal encirclement battles of the war. By late 1944, the division—originally formed as a mounted SS formation for anti-partisan warfare—had been converted largely into dismounted cavalry and infantry, fighting alongside the 22nd SS Cavalry Division “Maria Theresia” as part of the German–Hungarian forces defending Hungary. When Soviet troops of the 2nd and 3rd Ukrainian Fronts encircled Budapest in December 1944, the 8th SS Cavalry Division was trapped inside the city and its surrounding hills, forced into desperate urban and defensive combat far removed from its original cavalry role.

During the siege, the division fought in brutal street fighting, cellar-to-cellar battles, and defensive strongpoints, particularly in the Buda hills and western districts of the city. Severely under-supplied, short of ammunition, and suffering heavy casualties, Florian Geyer troops resisted repeated Soviet assaults while German relief efforts (Operations Konrad I–III) failed to break the encirclement. By February 1945, the division was effectively destroyed; only small groups survived the final breakout attempt on 11 February 1945, with most personnel killed or captured. The annihilation of the 8th SS Cavalry Division at Budapest marked the end of its existence as a fighting formation and stands as a stark example of Germany’s collapsing military situation in the war’s final months.
