NEW FROM COLONEL MULLER!

Operation Barbarossa began on 22 June 1941 and was the largest land invasion in history, with German forces driving deep into Soviet territory in a fast-moving campaign built around Blitzkrieg principles. At the heart of this advance were the Panzergrenadiers, the motorised infantry of the Panzer divisions, tasked with keeping pace with tanks, securing breakthroughs, and eliminating resistance that armour alone could not handle. Riding in trucks or half-tracks such as the Sd.Kfz. 251, they followed closely behind the leading panzers, dismounting quickly to clear villages, forests, and defensive strongpoints.

During the early months of Barbarossa, Panzergrenadiers played a crucial role in encircling large Soviet formations in massive pocket battles such as Minsk, Smolensk, and Kiev. Their combination of mobility, firepower (with MG34 machine guns, mortars, and infantry weapons), and coordination with tanks and artillery allowed them to exploit breakthroughs rapidly and prevent Soviet units from regrouping. However, as the campaign dragged on into late 1941, the limits of Blitzkrieg became apparent—long supply lines, harsh terrain, and the onset of winter slowed operations, and Panzergrenadiers increasingly found themselves fighting as standard infantry in defensive or attritional battles. Despite this, their role in the opening phase of Barbarossa was critical to the initial German successes, embodying the speed, coordination, and flexibility that defined early-war German tactics.
