Epirus - War Elephants (Design 1)
The War Elephants of Epirus were among the most imposing weapons fielded by King Pyrrhus of Epirus during his campaigns against Rome in the early 3rd century BC. Pyrrhus brought Indian elephants west as part of his Hellenistic army, using their immense size and psychological impact to disrupt enemy formations and terrify horses unfamiliar with them. At the Battle of Heraclea in 280 BC, the elephants played an important role in throwing the Roman cavalry into confusion and helping secure Pyrrhus’ victory. Supported by infantry and light troops, these towering animals gave the Epirote army a formidable battlefield presence, although the Romans gradually developed tactics to counter them as the Pyrrhic War continued.
