The German Afrika Korps (DAK) was the expeditionary force sent to North Africa in 1941 to support Italian forces against the advancing British Commonwealth armies. Commanded initially by Erwin Rommel, the Afrika Korps quickly gained a reputation for bold manoeuvre warfare, using speed, surprise, and coordinated attacks by tanks, infantry, and artillery to achieve success in the harsh desert environment. Equipped with vehicles such as the Panzer III, Panzer IV, and Sd.Kfz. 251 half-tracks, the DAK fought a series of intense campaigns across Libya and Egypt, including the sieges of Siege of Tobruk and the battles of First Battle of El Alamein and Second Battle of El Alamein.

Despite impressive tactical successes, the Afrika Korps was continually hampered by long supply lines, fuel shortages, and overwhelming Allied naval and air superiority in the Mediterranean. Following the defeat at El Alamein and the Allied landings in Operation Torch, Axis forces were steadily pushed back into Tunisia, where they surrendered in May 1943. The Afrika Korps remains one of the most famous German formations of World War II, remembered for its mobile desert warfare and the demanding conditions under which it fought.
