German - DAK - Rommel & Greif

Erwin Rommel and “Greif” became one of the most recognisable command combinations of the North African Campaign. Rommel, commander of the Deutsches Afrikakorps and later Panzerarmee Afrika, frequently travelled close to the front to observe the battlefield and direct his fast-moving formations. Greif was one of Rommel’s distinctive Sd.Kfz.250/3 command half-tracks, equipped with additional radio equipment and easily identified in photographs by its large name painted on the vehicle’s sides. Used as a mobile command post in the desert, it allowed Rommel and his staff to remain in communication with German units while accompanying the advance, making the image of Rommel aboard Greif an enduring symbol of the Afrika Korps during the campaigns of 1941–42.
