The Vistula Legion was a Polish formation in Napoleon’s army, created in 1808 from Polish troops who had served in the Polish Legions in Italy and were later reorganised under French command. Sent to Spain during the Peninsular War, the Legion quickly gained a reputation as one of the most reliable and disciplined foreign units in French service. By 1812, it was composed of several infantry regiments, cavalry squadrons, and artillery batteries, numbering around 7,000 men at its height. The Legion fought with distinction in many of the key campaigns across the Iberian Peninsula, often used as shock troops in difficult battles. Their loyalty to Napoleon and high morale were fuelled by hopes that French victories would eventually lead to the full restoration of Polish independence.

In 1812, during the height of the war in Spain, the Vistula Legion continued to serve with the French in battles against the combined forces of Britain, Spain, and Portugal. They were particularly noted for their bravery in siege warfare, including actions at Ciudad Rodrigo and Badajoz, where Polish soldiers were heavily engaged in bloody assaults on fortified positions. Despite their reputation, the Legion suffered significant casualties due to the brutal nature of the Peninsular fighting, compounded by guerrilla warfare, disease, and supply shortages. Even so, their determination and professionalism left a lasting impression on both allies and enemies, and the Vistula Legion became one of the most celebrated Polish contributions to the Napoleonic Wars.
