The British Infantry Square (1815) was a defensive formation used extensively during the Napoleonic Wars, most famously at the Battle of Waterloo, to repel cavalry attacks. Formed by infantry companies arranging themselves into a hollow square, with bayonets facing outward on all sides, the formation created a bristling wall of steel that cavalry found extremely difficult to penetrate. Officers and colours were positioned in the centre, while disciplined volleys of musket fire were delivered at close range to break charging horsemen. The effectiveness of the square relied heavily on discipline, timing, and steady nerves, as any break in formation could prove catastrophic.
