Armed with weapons such as the Lee-Enfield rifle, Sten submachine gun, Bren light machine gun, PIAT anti-tank launcher, and 2-inch mortar, British airborne troops were expected to fight while isolated and often outnumbered until relieved by conventional forces.
British airborne forces played a decisive role in major operations including the Normandy landings, Operation Market Garden, and the Rhine Crossing. Whether arriving by parachute or glider, they earned a formidable reputation for courage, discipline, and resilience under extreme pressure.
