The Japanese Type 4 Ke-Nu was a light tank developed during World War II as a stopgap measure to improve the firepower of outdated Type 95 Ha-Go tanks. Introduced in 1944, the Ke-Nu combined the Type 95 Ha-Go chassis with the turret of the older Type 97 Chi-Ha, which mounted a more capable 57mm low-velocity gun. This upgrade was intended to provide better infantry support and limited anti-tank capability, addressing the Ha-Go’s underpowered 37mm gun. Armor protection remained light, with thickness ranging from 6mm to 25mm, making the Ke-Nu vulnerable to most Allied weapons. It was primarily used in rear-area defense roles and for the defense of the Japanese home islands, as it was already outdated by the time of its introduction. Fewer than 100 units were produced, mostly by reusing existing components. While the Ke-Nu offered only a modest improvement, it reflected Japan’s efforts to stretch its limited resources and extend the usefulness of older equipment in the final years of the war.
