The Japanese Snipers of World War II were highly trained marksmen used to harass enemy troops, disrupt movement, and create psychological pressure on advancing forces. Typically armed with the Type 97 sniper rifle, a scoped version of the Type 38 Arisaka, these soldiers were selected for their marksmanship, patience, and fieldcraft. Japanese snipers were known for their ability to remain concealed for long periods, often using natural cover such as dense jungle foliage, ruined buildings, or elevated positions in trees to observe and engage targets at range.

Operating either alone or in small teams, snipers were frequently tasked with targeting officers, machine-gun crews, and radio operators to weaken enemy coordination. Their effectiveness was especially noted in jungle environments across the Pacific, where visibility was limited and concealment was easier to maintain. Japanese snipers often used camouflage and carefully prepared firing positions to remain undetected, making them a persistent threat to Allied troops during campaigns such as Guadalcanal, New Guinea, and Okinawa.
