The Soviet KV-85 was a transitional heavy tank developed during World War II as an upgrade to the aging KV-1 series, combining improved firepower with a more modern turret design. Introduced in 1943, it featured the powerful 85mm D-5T gun, the same weapon later used on early T-34/85s, allowing it to effectively engage newer German tanks like the Panther and Tiger I. The KV-85 retained the KV series’ thick armor, with up to 110mm of frontal protection, but incorporated a new, larger turret based on that of the upcoming IS-1/IS-2 series, providing better crew ergonomics and combat efficiency. Powered by a V-2 diesel engine, the KV-85 was slower and heavier than medium tanks but remained a valuable breakthrough and support vehicle. Only around 148 units were produced, as it was quickly superseded by the more advanced IS-series tanks, which offered superior firepower, armor, and mobility. Despite its short production run, the KV-85 served effectively on the Eastern Front and marked an important evolutionary step in Soviet heavy tank development.
