The Japanese Type 4 Ka-Tsu was an amphibious landing craft developed by the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II to transport troops, equipment, and supplies directly from submarines or ships to shore in hostile or remote areas. Introduced in 1943–1944, the Ka-Tsu was powered by twin diesel engines and featured a fully tracked design for mobility on both land and water. It had a watertight hull, retractable intake and exhaust systems for submerged operations, and could be launched from submarine decks, making it a unique and versatile asset for special operations. While unarmored and lightly built, the Ka-Tsu was intended to carry up to one ton of cargo or a small squad of infantry, and later variants were modified to carry torpedoes for surprise attacks on anchored enemy ships. However, due to Japan’s deteriorating war situation and limited production capacity, only a small number were built, and the Ka-Tsu never saw full operational use. Despite its limited deployment, it demonstrated innovative thinking in Japan’s amphibious warfare strategy and was one of the most unusual vehicle designs of the Pacific War.
