The British Airborne 2-inch Mortar was a lightweight infantry support weapon carried by the 1st and 6th Airborne Divisions during World War II. Compact and easy to transport, it was ideal for airborne operations where weight and mobility were critical. Operated by a two-man crew, the 2-inch mortar could fire high-explosive, smoke, and illumination rounds, providing immediate fire support for airborne infantry without the need for heavier artillery. The 2-inch mortar saw extensive service during the Normandy landings, Operation Market Garden, and the Rhine Crossing, where airborne troops often fought in isolation until relieved by ground forces. Its portability allowed mortar teams to move quickly with advancing infantry, using high-angle fire to suppress enemy positions, screen movements with smoke, and illuminate the battlefield during night operations. Though limited in range compared with larger mortars, it was a highly valued weapon that gave British airborne units flexible and responsive fire support in some of the most demanding battles of the war.
