The Sherman M4A2 was one of the major production variants of the iconic M4 medium tank, distinguished by its General Motors twin diesel engine and welded hull construction. Introduced in 1942, it retained the Sherman’s characteristic mobility, reliability, and ease of maintenance while offering improved fuel economy compared to petrol-engined models. Early M4A2s were armed with the 75mm M3 gun, giving them solid high-explosive performance against infantry and fortifications, while later versions mounted the 76mm M1 gun for improved anti-tank capability. Armour thickness ranged from 38–63mm, with the hull and turret layouts largely matching other Sherman variants. The welded hull made the M4A2 more durable and easier to mass-produce, and its diesel powerplant made it particularly appealing to Allied nations that already used diesel equipment.
The M4A2 was supplied in large numbers through Lend-Lease to the British, Commonwealth forces, and especially the Soviet Union, who valued its mechanical reliability and winter performance. In British service it saw action in North Africa, Italy, and Northwest Europe, while the Soviets used both 75mm and 76mm versions from Kursk onward, often praising its dependable engines and good crew ergonomics. U.S. forces generally did not field the M4A2 in frontline combat (preferring petrol-engined variants), though the U.S. Marine Corps used it extensively in the Pacific due to the diesel’s reduced fire risk. Versatile, rugged, and widely exported, the M4A2 became one of the most globally significant Sherman variants, serving in multiple armies well into the postwar era.
