The USA GMC CCKW-353 Truck with Tarpaulin was one of the most essential logistics vehicles of World War II, earning the nickname “Deuce and a Half” for its 2½-ton cargo capacity. Introduced in 1941 and produced by General Motors, it served as the backbone of Allied transport operations across every theatre of the war. Powered by a 270 cubic inch GMC inline-six engine, the 6x6 truck could carry troops, ammunition, fuel, and supplies over rugged terrain, with a top speed of around 72 km/h (45 mph). The tarpaulin-covered cargo bed provided protection for personnel and cargo from the elements, making it highly versatile in all weather conditions.

Over 500,000 units were built, and the CCKW-353 played a crucial role in sustaining Allied offensives—most famously during the Red Ball Express, the massive supply operation following the Normandy landings in 1944. Reliable, durable, and easy to repair, the GMC truck became the workhorse of the U.S. Army, symbolising the logistical power that underpinned Allied victory. Its design influenced post-war military trucks worldwide and remains an icon of wartime mobility and engineering efficiency.
