The M22 Locust was a lightweight American airborne tank developed during World War II to provide armoured support for airborne forces. Designed in 1941–42, it was extremely compact and light—weighing just 7.4 tons—so it could be transported by glider or aircraft. The Locust was armed with a 37mm M6 gun and a .30 calibre machine gun, offering modest firepower intended mainly for engaging light vehicles, infantry, and fortified positions rather than enemy tanks. Armour protection was thin, ranging from 9–25mm, reflecting the need to keep weight to a minimum. Powered by a Lycoming O-435 engine, it could reach speeds of around 64 km/h (40 mph), making it fast and agile once deployed.
The M22 Locust saw limited combat use, most notably with British airborne forces during Operation Varsity in March 1945, the Rhine crossing, where it was known as the “Locust” (the U.S. designation was Light Tank M22). While innovative, the tank suffered from mechanical issues, light armour, and insufficient firepower, limiting its battlefield effectiveness. Only about 830 units were produced, and the U.S. Army ultimately decided not to deploy it operationally. Despite its shortcomings, the M22 Locust represents an important early attempt at airborne armour and influenced later post-war light tank and airborne vehicle concepts.
