British - Airborne 1944 - HQ

The British Airborne HQ Section formed the command element of an airborne platoon or company, responsible for directing operations, maintaining communications, and coordinating supporting weapons during World War II. Led by an officer, the HQ section typically included radio operators, runners, signallers, and senior NCOs, all equipped with portable wireless sets, maps, binoculars, and personal weapons such as Sten submachine guns, Lee-Enfield rifles, or revolvers. Designed to deploy by parachute or glider, the HQ section enabled commanders to maintain control of widely dispersed airborne forces immediately after landing.During operations such as the Normandy landings, Operation Market Garden, and the Rhine Crossing, British Airborne HQ Sections often operated under intense pressure, coordinating isolated units while directing mortar fire, anti-tank teams, and supporting infantry. Their ability to maintain communications and organise the defence or capture of key objectives was critical to the success of airborne operations, where small units frequently had to hold vital positions against superior enemy forces until relieved by advancing Allied armies.
