The U.S. Jeep was one of the most iconic and versatile vehicles of World War II, serving as the backbone of Allied mobility. Officially designated the Willys MB (and later also produced by Ford as the GPW), the Jeep was a light 4x4 utility vehicle designed for reconnaissance, transport, and general-purpose use across every theatre of war. Introduced in 1941, it was fast, reliable, and rugged—powered by a 60hp Willys “Go Devil” engine that gave it a top speed of around 65 km/h (40 mph) and excellent off-road capability.

Weighing just over a ton, the Jeep could carry up to four men and equipment, tow light artillery, or mount weapons such as .30 or .50 calibre machine guns for patrol and convoy defence. More than 640,000 were built during the war, serving with U.S., British, Soviet, and other Allied forces. Its simplicity, adaptability, and toughness made it indispensable for everything from frontline combat to medical evacuation and command duties. The Jeep became a symbol of American ingenuity and Allied cooperation—an enduring icon of mobility and versatility in wartime.
