The GAZ-AAA with M4 Quad Maxim was a Soviet self-propelled anti-aircraft vehicle developed during the 1930s and early years of World War II. Built on the reliable GAZ-AAA 6×4 truck chassis, it mounted the M4 anti-aircraft installation, which consisted of four 7.62mm Maxim machine guns arranged in a rotating mount. This combination provided a high volume of fire against low-flying aircraft and was one of the Red Army’s primary mobile air-defence systems before more modern anti-aircraft guns became widely available. The truck chassis offered good mobility on roads and reasonable cross-country performance, allowing the weapon to accompany advancing troops and protect supply columns.
The GAZ-AAA M4 served extensively during the early stages of the German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941, defending troop concentrations, airfields, bridges, and logistics routes from Luftwaffe attacks. In addition to its anti-aircraft role, the quad Maxim mount proved effective against infantry, cavalry, and lightly protected vehicles, making it a versatile support weapon in ground combat. Although gradually replaced by heavier-calibre anti-aircraft systems as the war progressed, the GAZ-AAA with M4 Quad Maxim remained an important component of Soviet mobile air defence and exemplified the Red Army’s practical approach to adapting existing equipment for multiple battlefield roles.
