The Soviet T-28A Medium Tank was an early interwar multi-turreted design, introduced in 1933 as part of the Red Army’s efforts to develop breakthrough tanks capable of supporting infantry and crushing fortified positions. Based on concepts influenced by the British Vickers A1E1 Independent, the T-28A featured a main turret armed with a 45mm 20-K gun and two smaller machine-gun turrets mounted at the front hull, each fitted with a 7.62mm DT machine gun. Armour protection was modest, ranging from 10–30mm, while its M-17L V12 petrol engine gave it a top speed of around 37 km/h (23 mph), making it reasonably mobile for such a large vehicle. The T-28A had a crew of six and was among the most advanced medium tanks of its time, participating in the Soviet invasion of Poland (1939) and the Winter War against Finland (1939–40), where it proved effective but vulnerable to modern anti-tank weapons. By the German invasion of 1941, the T-28A was already obsolete, but many remained in frontline service, suffering heavy losses due to thin armour and mechanical unreliability. Despite its shortcomings, the T-28A was an important step in Soviet tank development, bridging the gap between early multi-turreted concepts and the more practical single-turret designs like the T-34.
