The French Char 2C was a massive interwar heavy tank, developed shortly after World War I and remaining the largest operational tank ever built. Measuring over 10 meters long and weighing around 69 tons, it was crewed by 12 men and armed with a 75mm gun mounted in a fully traversable turret, supported by multiple 8mm Hotchkiss machine guns. Armour protection was up to 45mm, impressive for its time but outdated by the outbreak of World War II. Powered by two Maybach engines, the Char 2C could only reach a top speed of 12 km/h (7.5 mph), limiting its tactical flexibility. Although intended as a breakthrough tank to smash through fortified lines, its sheer size, slow speed, and mechanical complexity made it unsuitable for modern mobile warfare. Only 10 vehicles were ever built, and by 1940 they were largely symbolic, paraded as propaganda pieces to showcase French armoured might. When Germany invaded France, the Char 2Cs were withdrawn to the rear; most were destroyed by their own crews to prevent capture. Despite never seeing combat, the Char 2C remains a legendary machine in armoured history due to its enormous size and imposing presence.
