The German Sd.Kfz. 250/7 “Granatwerfer” was a mortar carrier variant of the Sd.Kfz. 250 half-track, introduced in 1941 to provide mobile indirect fire support for mechanised infantry units. Based on the Sd.Kfz. 250 Ausf. B chassis, it was equipped with an 8cm GrW 34 mortar, mounted in the open-topped rear compartment. The mortar could be fired from the vehicle for quick support or dismounted and used on the ground for greater flexibility. Secondary armament typically included a 7.92mm MG34 or MG42 machine gun for close defence. Armour protection ranged from 8mm to 15mm, enough to stop small arms fire and shell fragments, while the vehicle’s Maybach HL 42 engine gave it a road speed of around 60 km/h (37 mph). The Sd.Kfz. 250/7 usually carried a crew of four to six, along with ammunition stowage for its mortar. It served on both the Eastern and Western Fronts, where its mobility allowed mortar teams to keep pace with advancing panzergrenadiers, delivering rapid and accurate indirect fire in support of infantry assaults.
