The Japanese “Banner Men” were soldiers or designated individuals who carried unit flags and regimental standards during military operations, particularly in the early and mid-stages of the war. These banners—often bearing the Rising Sun motif or specific regimental insignia—served both practical and symbolic purposes: they acted as rallying points during attacks and defensive actions, and reinforced unit identity and morale. In earlier campaigns, especially in China during the 1930s, banner carriers could be seen advancing with infantry formations, reflecting traditional Japanese military customs and the emphasis on honour and esprit de corps.
 
By the later years of World War II, however, the tactical use of banner men declined as modern warfare, artillery, and air power made such visible markers dangerous on the battlefield. Nonetheless, flags remained highly significant culturally and spiritually, often associated with the Emperor and national identity. Even when not carried openly in combat, regimental colours continued to hold ceremonial and morale-boosting importance within Japanese units throughout the conflict.
