The British AEC Armoured Car Mk III was the final and most powerful variant of the AEC armoured car series, introduced in 1944 to provide heavier firepower and improved protection for reconnaissance and support roles. Built on a robust 4x4 chassis, the Mk III was armed with the 75mm gun from the Cromwell cruiser tank, replacing the 6-pounder of the earlier Mk II and giving it the ability to engage both enemy armour and fortified positions effectively. It retained a 7.92mm BESA machine gun for secondary armament and featured well-sloped armour up to 65mm thick, making it one of the most heavily protected armoured cars of the war. Despite its weight, the Mk III maintained good road speed and mobility, allowing it to perform long-range reconnaissance, infantry support, and exploitation roles. It saw service with British and Commonwealth forces in North-West Europe during the final stages of World War II, where crews valued its combination of tank-like firepower and armoured car agility. Post-war, it continued to serve in several armies, cementing its reputation as one of the finest heavy armoured cars of its era.
