Australian - New Guinea Infantry Teams (With Shirts)
The Australian New Guinea Infantry Teams were the frontline soldiers who fought some of the toughest campaigns of World War II in the jungles and mountains of New Guinea between 1942 and 1945. Organised into small sections and platoons, these troops were equipped with Lee-Enfield rifles, Bren light machine guns, grenades, and submachine guns, providing a balance of firepower and mobility suited to jungle warfare. Operating in dense rainforest, steep mountain ranges, and swampy terrain, infantry teams often relied on patrols, ambushes, and close-range combat rather than large-scale manoeuvre.
Australian infantry played a decisive role in battles such as the Kokoda Track Campaign, Buna-Gona, Lae, and Wewak, where they fought under extremely difficult conditions against determined Japanese defenders. Tropical disease, heavy rainfall, and challenging supply lines were constant obstacles, yet Australian soldiers adapted through experience and specialised jungle training. Their endurance, fieldcraft, and aggressive patrolling became hallmarks of Australian operations in the Pacific, helping to secure New Guinea and halt Japan’s advance toward Australia.
