The Australian Engineers of World War II, primarily from the Royal Australian Engineers (RAE), played a vital role in supporting combat operations across both the North African and Pacific theatres. Their duties included constructing and repairing roads, bridges, and airfields, clearing obstacles, laying and removing mines, and preparing defensive positions. In frontline conditions, engineer units also conducted demolitions, breached enemy fortifications, and assisted infantry in crossing difficult terrain such as rivers, jungles, and mountainous regions.

In the Pacific, Australian engineers were especially important due to the harsh environment, where dense jungle, mud, and lack of infrastructure made movement and supply extremely difficult. They worked closely with infantry and artillery units, often under fire, to maintain supply routes and support assaults on fortified Japanese positions. Equipped with explosives, tools, flamethrowers, and bridging equipment, they combined combat and construction roles, making them essential to both offensive and defensive operations. Their adaptability and technical skill were key factors in sustaining Australian forces in some of the most challenging conditions of the war.
