Australian - Jungle Division (NCO with Owens Gun)
The Australian Jungle Division was a specialised infantry formation developed in 1943 as the Australian Army adapted to the demands of fighting in the Southwest Pacific. Experience in New Guinea showed that standard infantry divisions were too large and cumbersome for jungle warfare, leading to a reorganisation that reduced manpower while increasing mobility and self-sufficiency. Heavy equipment, transport, and some artillery were cut back, while emphasis was placed on infantry, engineers, signals, and support units capable of operating in dense jungle terrain with limited supply lines.
Jungle Divisions fought in campaigns across New Guinea, Bougainville, New Britain, and Borneo, where difficult terrain, tropical disease, and extreme weather often proved as challenging as the enemy. Soldiers were trained in jungle navigation, patrolling, ambush tactics, and small-unit warfare, allowing them to operate effectively in environments where visibility was limited and conventional manoeuvre was difficult. The reorganisation proved highly successful, enabling Australian forces to conduct sustained offensive operations and making the Jungle Division one of the most effective adaptations to Pacific warfare.
