The Australian Commandos of World War II were elite light infantry units trained for reconnaissance, raiding, ambushes, and long-range patrol operations. Originally formed in 1941 as Independent Companies, these units were designed to operate behind enemy lines with a high degree of self-sufficiency, drawing inspiration from British commando forces. Typically lightly equipped and highly mobile, Australian Commandos relied on stealth, fieldcraft, and aggressive small-unit tactics rather than heavy weapons. Their training emphasised navigation, demolitions, jungle warfare, and independent action in difficult terrain.
Australian Commandos saw extensive service in the Southwest Pacific, particularly in New Guinea, New Britain, Bougainville, and Borneo, where they conducted reconnaissance patrols, gathered intelligence, disrupted enemy communications, and launched surprise attacks on isolated Japanese positions. Operating in some of the harshest conditions of the war, they became renowned for their endurance and adaptability in dense jungle environments. By 1943, many Independent Companies had been reorganised into Cavalry Commando Squadrons, continuing to play a vital role in Australian operations until the end of the war. Their success helped establish a proud commando tradition that continues within the Australian Army today.
