The German Nachtjäger Infantry Squad refers to late-war German infantry units trained and equipped for night fighting, reflecting the Wehrmacht’s efforts to counter overwhelming Allied superiority by exploiting darkness and reduced visibility. These squads were typically composed of well-trained infantry or selected Panzergrenadiers, equipped with infrared (IR) night-vision devices such as the ZG 1229 “Vampir” mounted on StG 44 assault rifles, as well as conventional weapons like MP40s, Kar98k rifles, MG42s, and Panzerfausts. Operating in small, stealthy teams, Nachtjäger troops were tasked with infiltration, reconnaissance, ambushes, and close-range engagements under cover of night.
Although still experimental and fielded in limited numbers during 1944–45, these squads saw action on the Eastern and Western Fronts, most notably with units such as Panzergrenadier-Division “Großdeutschland” and some late-war SS formations. Their enhanced night-fighting capability allowed them to strike unexpectedly at Allied patrols and armour, but shortages of IR equipment, batteries, and trained personnel heavily restricted their operational impact. Nonetheless, Nachtjäger squads represented one of the most technologically advanced infantry concepts of the war and a glimpse of the future of night-combat doctrine.
