The SS “Charlemagne” infantry squad in the defence of Berlin consisted of remnants of the 33rd SS Grenadier Division “Charlemagne” (French volunteers) who reached the city in April 1945 and were thrown into last-ditch street fighting. Typically organised as small, ad-hoc squads of 8–10 men, they were armed with Kar98k rifles, MP40 submachine guns, MG34/MG42 for section fire, and Panzerfausts for close-range anti-tank defence, with scarce grenades and ammunition. Operating from cellars, upper floors, and rubble positions around the Tiergarten, Reichstag, and government quarter, they conducted short ambushes, covered withdrawals, and defended barricades under overwhelming Soviet artillery and armour. Poor supply, minimal medical support, and fractured command meant extreme attrition; most of these volunteers were killed or captured in the final days, illustrating the desperate, improvised, and ultimately futile nature of Berlin’s last defence.
