The German Volkssturm fighting squad in the Defence of Berlin (April–May 1945) was an ad-hoc militia unit of 8–12 men drawn from boys and older men (roughly ages 16–60) with minimal training and scant equipment. Typically led by a Wehrmacht/SS veteran or Party official, squads fought from cellars, upper floors, and rubble barricades to delay Soviet advances around key sectors like the Tiergarten and Reichstag. Armament was whatever was available: Panzerfausts (their main anti-tank weapon), Kar98k rifles, occasional MP40s, improvised MP 3008 or VG 1–5 rifles, captured weapons, and sometimes an MG34/MG42 if assigned from army stocks. Uniforms were a mix of civilian clothing, old tunics, and a Volkssturm armband; ammunition, radios, and medical supplies were scarce. Tactics centred on short-range ambushes, street barricades, and close-quarters fighting in stairwells and courtyards. Casualties were extremely high, cohesion fragile, and combat value uneven—yet in pockets they inflicted delays through sheer numbers, local knowledge, and the Panzerfaust’s lethality in urban terrain.
