The SS “Charlemagne” mortar squad in the defence of Berlin was a small, desperate detachment drawn from remnants of the 33rd SS Grenadier Division “Charlemagne” (French volunteers) pressed into service during April–May 1945. Equipped typically with light and medium infantry mortars—most commonly the 8 cm Granatwerfer 34 (81mm) for sustained indirect fire and sometimes smaller 5 cm or 3.7 cm mortars for close support—these squads provided short-range indirect fire to break up Soviet infantry assaults, suppress enemy strongpoints, and support machine-gun positions in the cramped urban fighting. Operating from improvised firing positions in basements, cellars, and rubble-strewn streets, they worked alongside MG teams and anti-tank detachments to delay Soviet advances around key objectives such as the government quarter and the Reichstag. Poorly supplied, outnumbered, and cut off from organised command, Charlemagne mortar crews suffered very high casualties; survivors were mostly killed or captured as Berlin fell, and their involvement remains a grim footnote to the multinational, ad-hoc nature of Germany’s final defence.
