The SS “Charlemagne” MG squad in the defence of Berlin was a small, fanatical detachment drawn from the remnants of the 33rd SS Grenadier Division “Charlemagne,” a formation largely made up of French volunteers who fought for Nazi Germany. In April–May 1945 a few dozen veterans and reinforcements from Charlemagne reached central Berlin and were thrown into the desperate street fighting as specialised infantry teams—often operating as machine-gun squads supporting last-ditch defensive strongpoints, anti-tank positions, and barricades in districts around the Reichstag, Tiergarten, and the government quarter. Lightly supplied and vastly outnumbered, these crews manned MG positions to cover infantry movement and delay Soviet assaults, suffering very high casualties; survivors were either killed, captured by Soviet forces, or in some cases taken prisoner by Western units during the chaotic final days. Their presence in Berlin is remembered as an example of the multinational and fractured nature of Germany’s final defence, not as a reflection of any legitimate political cause.
