The Australian Flamethrower Team (tank-type) was a specialised assault unit equipped with backpack or “tank” flamethrowers, similar in concept to those used by U.S. forces during World War II. Most commonly using the Australian-designed Lifebuoy flamethrower, the weapon consisted of a fuel tank unit worn on the operator’s back, connected to a handheld projector that discharged a stream of burning fuel at short range. Operated by a 2–3 man team, one soldier handled the flamethrower while the others provided close protection with rifles or submachine guns.
Used extensively in the Pacific theatre, particularly in New Guinea and Borneo, these teams were vital for clearing bunkers, trenches, and dense jungle strongpoints where enemy forces were difficult to dislodge. The tank-style flamethrower allowed greater mobility and flexibility in tight terrain compared to vehicle-mounted systems, though it required the operator to get dangerously close to the target. As with other flamethrower units, Australian teams worked closely with infantry and engineers during assaults, providing one of the most effective means of overcoming fortified Japanese positions despite the high risks involved.
