The Banzai Charge was a mass infantry assault tactic used by the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II, characterised by a sudden, aggressive advance against enemy positions, often accompanied by loud shouts of “Tenno Heika Banzai!” (“Long live the Emperor”). Rooted in pre-war military doctrine that emphasised offensive spirit, honour, and self-sacrifice, these charges were typically launched when a unit faced encirclement, dwindling ammunition, or imminent defeat. Armed with rifles, bayonets, grenades, and sometimes swords, troops would attempt to overwhelm enemy lines through shock and close-quarters combat.
While occasionally effective against unprepared or lightly defended positions earlier in the war, Banzai charges became increasingly costly as Allied forces improved defensive tactics, automatic weapons deployment, and artillery coordination. In major battles such as Saipan, Guadalcanal, and Okinawa, large-scale charges resulted in devastating casualties for Japanese forces. By the later stages of the war, such attacks often represented acts of desperation rather than sound tactical decisions, reflecting both the deteriorating strategic situation and the strong cultural emphasis on honour over surrender within Japanese military doctrine.
