The British Medium Mark A Whippet was a World War I medium tank designed to complement the slow, heavy Mark IV tanks by exploiting breakthroughs and engaging enemy positions with greater speed. Introduced in 1917, the Whippet was armed with four .303 Hotchkiss machine guns mounted in side sponsons, allowing fire in multiple directions. Armour thickness ranged from 8mm to 14mm, enough to protect against rifle and machine gun fire. Powered by two Tylor inline 4-cylinder petrol engines, it could reach speeds of up to 13 km/h (8 mph)—fast for its time—earning it the nickname "Whippet". It carried a crew of three and was used effectively in the closing months of the war, particularly in mobile warfare during the German Spring Offensive and the Allied Hundred Days Offensive. Though it never served in World War II, the Whippet influenced later British armoured doctrine by proving the value of faster, more manoeuvrable tanks alongside heavier assault types.
