The British Vickers Light Tank Mark IV was an upgraded interwar reconnaissance tank developed in the mid-1930s to improve upon earlier Vickers light tank designs. Introduced in 1934–1935, it retained the small, fast profile of its predecessors but featured a redesigned turret with better crew protection and vision, as well as improved suspension for smoother cross-country performance. Armament consisted of a .50 inch Vickers heavy machine gun paired with a .303 Vickers machine gun, providing adequate firepower for scouting and infantry support against lightly armed opponents. Armour protection ranged from 4mm to 14mm, enough to stop small arms fire but offering little resistance to anti-tank weapons. Powered by a Meadows 6-cylinder petrol engine, the Mark IV could reach speeds of up to 56 km/h (35 mph), making it agile for reconnaissance roles. It was used mainly in training and colonial garrisons, with limited operational deployment at the start of World War II, before being replaced by more modern designs. Though quickly rendered obsolete in combat, the Vickers Light Tank Mark IV contributed to the development of Britain’s pre-war armoured doctrine and light vehicle engineering.
