The Kenpeitai were the military police and internal security force of the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II, serving roles that combined military policing, counterintelligence, and political enforcement. Established in the late 19th century, by the 1930s–40s the Kenpeitai operated not only within Japan but also across occupied territories in China, Korea, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific. In addition to maintaining discipline within the armed forces, they functioned as a secret police organisation, tasked with rooting out dissent, enforcing loyalty to the Emperor, and suppressing resistance movements.
 
Kenpeitai officers and agents held broad powers of arrest and interrogation, often operating independently of civilian authorities. Their methods were widely feared, particularly in occupied regions, where they conducted intelligence operations and anti-partisan actions. While they were not strictly “political officers” in the same structured sense as some other armies, they played a key role in ideological enforcement and maintaining military and civilian compliance with wartime policies. By 1945, the Kenpeitai were deeply involved in security operations within Japan itself, as the war situation deteriorated and fears of unrest grew.
