The British A25 Light Tank Mk VII, officially named the Tetrarch, was a compact airborne-capable light tank developed in the late 1930s and produced during the early years of World War II. Weighing just over 7.5 tons, it was lightly armored—up to 16mm—and armed with a 2-pounder (40mm) main gun alongside a coaxial 7.92mm BESA machine gun, giving it modest firepower suitable for reconnaissance and light combat roles. Powered by a Meadows 12-cylinder petrol engine, the Tetrarch could reach speeds of 64 km/h (40 mph) on roads and was highly maneuverable. Its most notable feature was its ability to be transported by Hamilcar gliders, allowing it to be deployed in airborne operations. First seeing combat in Madagascar in 1942 and later during the Normandy landings and the advance into Germany, the Tetrarch proved useful for rapid deployment but was vulnerable to enemy anti-tank weapons and had limited cross-country performance compared to heavier tanks. Only around 177 units were built, and while its operational impact was limited, the Tetrarch remains notable as one of the few tanks specifically designed for air transport in the Second World War.
