The USA M7 Priest (Early War Variant) was an American self-propelled gun introduced in 1942, designed to give armoured divisions mobile artillery support. Built on the M3 Lee medium tank chassis, it mounted the reliable 105mm M2A1 howitzer in an open-topped fighting compartment, allowing rapid fire support for advancing troops. The vehicle earned its nickname “Priest” from the pulpit-like machine gun ring mount fitted with a .50 cal M2 Browning. Armour thickness ranged up to 51mm, providing protection from small arms fire and shell fragments while keeping weight low enough for good mobility. Powered by a Continental R975 radial engine, the early M7 could reach speeds of 38 km/h (24 mph) and was used extensively in North Africa, Italy, and the early stages of the European campaign. Its combination of firepower, mobility, and reliability made it a vital part of Allied artillery forces, setting the standard for future self-propelled gun designs.
